Insects on Display: A Guide to Mounting & Displaying Insects by Connie Zakowski, X FROM THE INTRO: Insects On Display was written to be a companion book to my first title, The Insect Book: A Basic Guide to the Collection and Care of Common Insects for Young Children (Rainbow Books, Inc.). The Insect Book describes how children can catch and keep many different insects. Because the captured insects die rather quickly, due to their short life-span, I wanted to give readers an activity to help preserve their collection. This book describes what you need to know and the supplies you need to begin mounting insects in both box and dome settings. I have even included a few inexpensive substitutions for some of the supplies you will need to keep your insect-mounting projects affordable. My hand-illustrated, step-by-step instructions will demonstrate several ways to mount various insects. In this book I cover how to mount and display winged insects (butterflies and moths), hard-shell insects (beetles), and difficult-to-mount insects (walking sticks, flies, grasshoppers, katydids, and mantids). Displaying mounted insects is a rewarding hobby that requires a fair amount of patience. It is an ideal hobby for the insect enthusiast, for the do-it-yourself crafter, for families looking for inexpensive hands-on activities, and for homeschooling parents who are looking for a great biology project for their kids. Children need to learn the important role insects play in our planets biology. For example, most crops would fail to produce food or seeds for new plants without the pollinating activities of insects such as bees. Other insects, such as fly larvae and termites, also function as garbage men that process animal and plant waste so it doesnt build up. Still other insects, such asmantids and wasps, hunt and eat insects, such as caterpillars, which destroy plants that produce food for humans. Collecting and mounting insects can evolve into a lesson for the entire family on how the natural world works.
Nature study - The nature study movement was a popular education movement in America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nature study—closely related to natural history—emphasized first-hand appreciation of nature and its beauty, rather than an analytical understanding of the natural world. Butterfly knife - The Balisong is a butterfly knife, and is sometimes known as a Batangas knife, is a form of folding pocket knife with two handles that counter-rotate around the tang such that, when closed, the blade is concealed within grooves in the handles. In the hands of a trained user, the knife blade can be brought forth quickly using one hand. Great Mother - The Great Mother manifests itself in myth as a host of archaic images. Commonly conceived of as a nature goddess, the recurrent theme of nature and motherly care go hand in hand. Fechtbuch - ... is German for 'combat manual', one of the manuscripts or printed books of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance containing descriptions of a martial art. Usually, the term is taken to include 15th and 16th century German manuals, but the nature of the subject matter does not allow a clear separation of these from treatises from other parts of Europe on one hand (particularly from the Italian and French schools), and from manuals of later centuries on the other hand.
